There have been numerous press reports about “vote flipping.” I did an analysis of the eSlate, my local voting machine, including mocked up screen shots, to attempt to explain the issue.

I’m an election judge in CO where we use these machines. Not only are they terrible from a UI perspective, they’re badly designed and often break from being jostled around in the car on the way to the polling place, causing delays while judges wait for repairs.
Our solution? We are pushing paper ballots and making use of the machine as “opt-in” as the law will allow.

For my ballot, which I cast this morning, the summary screen was actually three separate pages listing my selections. Races in which I abstained to offer a selection were highlighted in red text.
